Botulinum Toxin
Botulinum toxin is referred to by many names including neurotoxin, neuromodulator, "tox", or most commonly, by one of its major brand names, Botox®. There are multiple brands of botulinum toxin that work similarly but also have their own unique qualities. Generally, neurotoxins work to relax fine lines and wrinkles. The softening of these fine lines and wrinkles give the skin a smoother and more youthful appearance.

What To Know
What is a neurotoxin?

Botulinum toxin type A is an injectable neuromodulator, better known under brand names such as Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau®, and Daxxify®. These neuromodulators temporarily block nerve impulses in the muscle, causing them to relax. This results in softening of fine lines and reduces the appearance of the dynamic wrinkles caused by our facial expressions.
What areas can be treated?

The most commonly treated areas include forehead lines, frown lines (known as the “11s” that form between your eyebrows), and crow’s feet around the eyes. There are other areas of the face that can be treated as well.
Is there any downtime after treatment?
​
For the most part, you can resume your normal activities immediately following neurotoxin injections. However, it is crucial to avoid the following:
-No raising body temperature for 4 hours (no exercise, hot tubs, saunas, sun exposure, etc.)
-No touching or manipulating the area for 4 hours (nothing should touch your face including your hands, hats, visors, headbands, etc. and no lying down)
-No makeup for the rest of the day after the treatment but face can be washed about 4 hours
*Since bruising may occur, it is best to schedule treatment 2-4 weeks prior to any special event
Will the neurotoxin take effect immediately?

No, you will begin to notice the effects anywhere from 2-14 days after treatment.

How long do the effects last?
​
Every patient is different, but most neurotoxins typically last between 3-6 months. Most patients are seen in 3 month intervals to maintain wrinkle relaxation.
